Open Evening Proves to be a Huge Success

It is pleasing to record the success of our Open/Recruitment Evening held after the September 2010 lodge meeting.

Four gentlemen who attended expressed interest in membership after hearing and seeing the recruitment PowerPoint presentation.

After the necessary paperwork was completed, they were interviewed and a ballot taken for them, they were initiated in December 2010, January 2011 and February 2011 respectively.

The fourth gentleman will be initiated (this week) on Wednesday 16th March 2011.

In the meanwhile another gentleman has expressed interest and after his paperwork is completed and he is found suitable at interview he will be put forward for a ballot.  If the ballot is successful he will be initiated in May 2011.

In is fair to say that The Sunderland Lodge is going through somewhat of a revival and the future looks extremely bright.  We have ceremonies which will continue until early 2013 and perhaps by then we may have even more potential candidates?

It was pleasing that the lodge was able to invite seven gentlemen to our Open Night.  They were shown a presentation "A Walk Around the Lodge Room" and this was followed by a question and answer session.  later in the evening they joined lodge members at the Festive Board (the new caterer provided a most excellent meal!).

This was followed by an excellent Festive Board the meal being based on parts of the consecration menu of 1920.  This was enjoyed by 75 members and their guests and the lodge was pleased to have the presence of a Provincial Deputation led by W.Bro. CONGRATULATIONS

Our congratulations go to W. Bro. David Bambrough on his recent promotion to Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden.

Every year there are a number of Provincial events which culminate with a banquet.  Brethren walk into the room, sit down at their appropriate place and enjoy the meal.

Often little though goes into the fact that somebody has collected in money for the event, distributed tickets, produced a seating plan, menus and table place cards.

David has for many years organized this part of the banquets and that achievement was recognized at the annual meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge on Saturday 26th June.

David was promoted to PPrSGW and was totally unaware that this was about to happen.  This definitely showed on his face!

Well done David and keep up the good work!

W.Bro. Jim Alderson, P.Pr.J.G.W.

We are all saddened by the death on Wednesday 7th July 2010 of one of our members, W.Bro. Jim Alderson, aged only 64 years.  He had been ill, though up until fairly recently he was an apparently healthy man.

Jim joined Sunderland Lodge in 1995, his mother lodge was Civic Lodge and he was also a member of Sportsman’s Lodge and Wear Lecture Lodge.  In Civic Lodge he was always deeply involved in their annual St. George’s Night.

Jim was a friendly big-hearted man who always had a smile on his face and would do his best to help a friend.  He was truly one of Freemasonry's gentlemen and he will be greatly missed by all his friends.
